FREE SuperHomes Open Days September 2017

16th September 2017 at Paignton Avenue, Whitley Bay

This year marks SuperHomes' 10th anniversary. To celebrate, two of the UK's most eco-friendly SuperHomes will be hosting free Open Days this September in Backworth (Thu 07, Fri 08, Sat 09, Sun 10) and Whitley Bay (Sat 16). SuperHomes are older homes refurbished by their owners who enjoy greater comfort, lower energy bills and at least 60% less carbon emissions.

In Whitley Bay, you will find owner Neal McCay - he is a first time opener and lives in a 1920s mid terrace house. Neal's motivation for his SuperHome was to reduce his utility bills while not compromising on comfort; lowering his carbon footprint has been an additional benefit. Neal has installed a wood burning stove which has not only added to his home's comfort but is an environmentally friendly alternative to heating your home than using gas and electricity. Backworth is home to Haydon Edward's 18th century original lodge which features an Air Source Heat Pump and a rain water harvesting system which collects rain water for use in the garden, toilet flushing and clothes washing machines. Although Haydon's project began in 2009, he too is a first time opener and his experience in the heating and construction industry has helped inspire his retrofit.

Take a tour of a SuperHome and you will come away with a number of energy saving tips for your own home. You can also expect to hear first-hand from the owners of their journey to becoming a SuperHomer and honest reviews of the process of improving your home sustainably.

The free events are co-ordinated by the National Energy Foundation and as it's our 10th year we have more SuperHomes open across the country this September than ever before and 100 events across the country.
